''crammed with facts and amply greased with a decent supply of well-turned phrases...this book is a gem.'
Review
"The original Brewer, still going strong, has always been a grand
source for myths and legends and etymological curiosities, so we expect
great things from this version, Ireland being rich in both departments.
It does not disappoint."
"Crammed with facts and amply greased with a decent supply of well-turned phrases...this book is a gem."
"A serious and scholarly work that packs in an amazing quantity of information."
"Has endless potential as a wet afternoon distraction."

A Goldmine of Irish Culture
Unfortunately, I was only given up to five stars to rate this book. However, it deserves at least 6 stars!!! It is possibly the most comprehensive collection ever of Irish culture, folklore , language and trivia. It is an essential addition to all bookshelves and will be enjoyed by everyone - not just the Irish. It is also a must for folklorists, linguists, historians and trivia fanatics. Anyone who appreciates this book is guaranteed to enjoy the following more concise companions : Bernard Share's "Slanguage",
Paddy Sammon's "Greenspeak", Thornton B. Edwards "Irish! A Dictionary of words beginning with the word'Irish'" and Byrne's "Dictionary of Irish Local History". All of these titles are available through Amazon.
