Delightful and Erudite
I discovered a battered paperback copy of this 1971 account of a trip round England and Scotland in a secondhand book shop. The author was a famous American naturalist who had previously won the Pulitzer Prize for his books about the seasons in the USA. In the book he recounts his travels with his wife. Without ever sounding precious or pedantic he demonstrates a deep general knowledge of the natural world and a new-comer's delight in the British flora and fauna which he encounters for the first time, as well as an impressive appreciation of English literature. If you think you might enjoy a cross between Bill Bryson and David Attenborough, writing in a simpler time, I think you will delight in this book.
