Synopsis
'Prayer is God's gift to us, a banquet of good things to feed our inner life, as we respond to the invitation to his feast of peace, forgiveness, challenge and love.' If our lives are an open book to God, prayer is the dialogue we share with him over its pages. The Book of a Thousand Prayers is a collection of wise and honest prayers to God about his concerns and ours: who he is to us and who we are to him, and how we experience life, death, relationships, the church and the world. Ideal for private prayer and public worship, and containing practical advice on how to pray, this book offers a spiritual feast that will nourish you for the rest of your life. 'A moving and inspiring medley of prayers -- an invaluable aid for individuals, home groups, and those people who lead worship.' Joyce Huggett

Seeking God
You will seek the Lord your God, and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.
DEUTERONOMY 4:29
1 O God, you are my God,
early will I seek you.
My flesh longs for you,
my soul thirsts for you,
in a barren and dry land where there is no water.
Psalm 63:1
2 Late have I loved you,
O Beauty so ancient and so new.
You called, and broke through my defences,
and now I long for you.
You breathed your fragrance on me,
and I drew in my breath
and now I pant for you.
I tasted you, and now I hunger and thirst for you.
You touched me,
and I burn for your peace.
St Augustine of Hippo (354–430)
3 Lord Jesus, I am not an eagle. All I have are the eyes and the
heart of one. In spite of my littleness, I dare to gaze at the sun
of love, and I long to fly towards it.
St Thérèse of Lisieux (1873–1897)
4 Holy Spirit
dwell in me,
that I may become prayer.
Whether I sleep or wake,
eat or drink,
labour or rest,
may the fragrance of prayer
rise, without effort, in my heart.
Purify my soul and never leave me,
so that the movements of my heart and mind
may, with voices full of sweetness,
sing in secret to God.
after St Isaac the Syrian (seventh century)
5 O sweetest love of God, too little known,
whoever has found you will be at rest.
Let everything change, O my God,
that I may rest in you.
How sweet to me is your presence,
you who are the sovereign good!
I will draw near to you in silence,
and will uncover your feet,
that it may please you to unite me with yourself,
making my soul your bride.
I will rejoice in nothing until I am in your arms;
O Lord, I beseech you, leave me not for a moment.
St John of the Cross (1542–1591)
6 Lord,
this moment is yours;
mine for you,
and yours for me.
I need you,
I cannot survive without you;
and yet I go on rushing through life
as if I could do everything in my own strength.
Forgive me.
I know
that you care for me at all times,
and that I am always in your hands;
but I still need to pause
and let my heart and spirit
be loved by you
into loving you again.

Customer Reviews
An invaluable source of prayers for all situations.
This book of prayers is ideal for those praying alone or leading intercessions for a larger group and indeed for any situation in between.
Subjects include Praise,Special Occasions, Worship, Healing, Death, Quietness, Birthdays,Growing Old....and many more, covering every facet of human life. The prayers are arranged in easy to find sections and are therefore extremely useful when preparing for any type of worship. They are also arranged in alphabetical order, by author and by theme so making it simple to find any sort of prayer you need.
As for the prayers themselves the variety is amazing, ranging from those written within the last few years to one written by St. Jerome round about 400AD! The prayers vary in length, language, tradition and style, and whereas some would suit the more mature in years, there are just as many for the younger reader.
Prayers for participation are also included with several having simple responses for groups of any size to repeat. There are even hints on how to pray in a variety of situations and how to use the book itself.
This book is not just a book of many prayers but also one of many uses and for many people. Buy, search, find and pray!
great value for money
it is a very handy thing to own as it will provide inspiration and wisdom. i am sorry that A. Davies had to write such a sarcastic and also selfish review on this book. i think it is great and if anyone is actually seriously looking for a prayer book this is a great one to add to the collection.
i prayed that A. Davies would hav all his prayers ignored and it worked! yay! (thats a joke)
i am sorry A. Davies that your grandmother died but maybe it was what she wanted and was her time. praying for things that will only make you feel good is not the best move. its not always whats best. and sadly we don't pray to have wishes granted.
this book does not claim to grant miracles or wishes it is only a guide to help you express your feelings.
and thats is what it does.
god bless you A. Davies i hope the faith you had was not resting on this book.
Can I have my money back please?
I have never before come across a book that promises so much and delivers so little.
I have prayed and prayed and prayed and prayed, but nothing I ask for comes to pass.
I asked for my son to pass his exams, but he got a D and had to go down a set. So I stopped praying and tried a different tack and got him some private tuition, and also sat down with him to plan his studies. Amazingly, he got a B and if his improvement continues he is going to go back to his original set!
I then tried praying for my grandmother's medical condition to improve as I heard that God was into medical stuff. She died last Thursday.
So, back to the drawing board, I thought I'd try something a bit more achievable and asked for my favourite football team (Leeds United) to get out of the 1st division. But no, they were docked 15 points and lost in the playoffs! Now either all the other teams' supporters prayed more than ours or, God hates Leeds Utd.
Despite this possibility I gave him one more chance. So I went for something a bit easier that even a rubbish God like Thor or Vishnu could do. Surely the big guy could come up with the goods this time. So I prayed harder than I had ever prayed before. I prayed so much I got knee problems and had to invest in a pair of carpet fitter's knee-pads. I prayed when I got up. I prayed when I got to bed. I prayed during my lunch time. I even prayed while whipping myself with a set of rosary beads and chewing broken glass. But even after ALL this, my dog keeps on chewing the table leg. So I showed God how to do it and sprayed the leg with WD40. Problem solved.
So there you have it. Proof positive that this book is rubbish and prayer doesn't work.
If you want something doing......do it yourself.
