Synopsis
Since Black's Law Dictionary is revised on average only once each decade, the publication of a new edition is a major event. The strong reputation that Black's has attained over the past 108 years positions it as the quintessential legal reference tool for the 21st century. The 7th edition of Black's Law Dictionary is the most comprehensive, authoritative, scholarly, and accessible American law dictionary ever published.
Customer Reviews
You will not need any other legal dictionary
Despite apparently having an American slant, this covers English law excellently well, too.
Apparently utterly exhaustive.
The definitions are logically grouped (e.g. under the heading "contract", there are definitions of zillions of types).
The various distinct meanings are set out and elaborated upon separately.
The book is excellent for highlighting current usage and also indicating historical, now defunct usages of terms and provides you with the vocabulary and broader means to express yourself in legal terms.
I'm a legal translator, and this book has revealed more to me about the law over the last couple of weeks than other legal dictionaries have over the course of years.
I have some legal training, but this is not required to be able to use this dictionary.
Careful: the paperback is a cut-down version of the h/back
Excellent as far as it goes, but the paperback edition has only a fraction of what is contained in the hardback edition. There is no mention of this on the Amazon site, however, and you think you're getting a frightfully good deal.
Make sure you get the full edition!
The Debater's dream book!
Black's Law Dictionary has come in handy on many occassions, especially during Debate meets. It is considered the most reliable source for definitions concerning the debate topic.
