Medical Microbiology has been improved and updated to keep it at the forefront of microbiological teaching practice. The clinically relevant, systems-based approach has been retained so as to emphasise the microbiology of the agents causing disease and the diseases affecting individual organ systems.
Over 250 color diagrams explain difficult concepts while color clinical photographs appear alongside the microbiology, stressing the clinical relevance of the science.
This book opens with an expanded basic introduction to viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. Then the immunology of the host is considered (again in more detail than in previous editions) before looking at the complex conflicts between host and invading agent. The clinical manifestations of these conflicts are explored within a systems-based context before concluding with a re-organised survey of microbiological diagnosis and control.
Throughout, attractive design features are used to highlight core information and make study and review that bit easier: Chapter Introductions, Key Facts Boxes, case-based Review Questions, new Microbiology Lessons and Summary Headings throughout make Medical Microbiology a pleasure to read.

Editorial Reviews
Review
Mims et al continue their proud tradition of delivering important and often complex material in a simple and informative style. Replete with new and colourful diagrams, impressively detailed images and totally new chapters this book is well formed for integration into the modern medical course. The new'Key Facts' boxes at the end of each chapter, concisely sum-up the preceeding information, and the MCQ-style questions test your knowledge. Undoubtedly it is a superb resource and a phenomenally written textbook. I can strongly recommend "Medical Microbiology 3E" as a vital resource to medical learning, and a generally interesting text about basic microbiology and immunological concepts. "Mims" appears to have an assured position on Medical Student bookshelves the world over.

Customer Reviews
Excellent for a quick-clinical based microbiology course
The quick review on the most important patogens at the end of the book helps greatly to memorize them if it's the first time you are dealing with this subject. The book is clinical based, and excellent to have a good overview on the most important pathogens. But it's lacking by the way he describes pathogens physiology. Murray is better for this (but not as good by the clinical point of view). So, no book is perfect. Using both Mims and Murray is a good association for a throught learning and understanding of microbiology.
Not enough detail
I'm sorry, but this book just doesn't cut it when it comes to understanding the pathology of infectious diseases. It would be a brilliant book for medical students in its layout - being divided into separate chapters depending on type of infection, notes on treatment, symptoms and a test at the end of each chapter, presenting a case and asking you for appropriate tests, diagnosis and treatment, with answers provided in the back.
However, I am not a medic. I'm a biochemist studying infectious diseases as a subsid subject and there is a sigificant lack of detail in this book. It is a clearly written book, describing, almost narratively, the backgrounds of various illnesses but it just doesn't describe HOW and that's what you need if you are trying to study the pathogenesis of any disease.
Very useful - handy summaries
This book is very colourful which on its own is a good thing and keeps students awake! Text is easy to read most of the time and the diagrams are clear and understandable. This book is a must for basic infection and immunity courses and helpful for medics too. Makes a great change from dull textbooks.
