At twenty to midnight Neil Griffon’s home is broken into and he is roughly abducted by masked men. He has no idea who they are, or what they want. But when Neil wakes up, hours later, he quickly discovers that unless he cooperates his kidnappers will destroy his father’s precious horses, racing stable and ultimately Neil himself.
Returned to take charge of the stables, Neil can tell no-one about his ordeal. Vicious threats and horrible violence against his horses become a day-to-day reality and he is forced to comply with his blackmailer’s wishes. Trapped in a war of attrition, Neil realises he must find a way to stop these criminals before his nerve gives out. After all, a choice between his integrity and his life is no choice at all . . .

Customer Reviews
This book is compelling reading and worth every penny
Another thriller from this unique crime writer Dick Francis. Bonecrack a story about two fathers, one with lots of money who will move heaven and earth to give what ever his son wants. The other whilst in hospital will not trust his son to run the racing stables he owns. Then one of the fathers tries to take control of both sons.
Bonecrack grabs you from page one with mistaken identity and death threats, to the day to day nightmares they face. Just when you can see a glimmer of escape, it brings you back to reality with blackmail and threats to both horses and sons.
I could not put this book down, even when it came to cooking dinner for the family I would read in between peeling the potato and scraping the carrots. You must read this book .
Flight delayed? Well here's your solution
Crime thriller in the world of Newmarket stables. A mafia-style boss is determined to get his son a ride on the favourite for the forthcoming Epsom Derby. Written in 1971 this book is full of guns ,druggings, kidnap, violence and intimidation - so beware.
Actually, its a ludicrous plot and this is somewhere on the evolutionary scale between cartoon strips and joined-up writing.
There is an 'Introduction' to this book to 'explain' it's inner meanings. Mr Francis has an issue with the end of the Sixties as he tries to eschew the rich posh world in favour of the more trendy rise of the working -class hero. Hence; went to Eton-but ran away, worked at Sotheby's but as a cleaner, drinks Chateau Lafite 1961 - but with baked beans, has a posh car but a gray Jensen not an E-Type Jag.
It's all hard, masculine stuff but give Mr Francis his due he's made millions. It is easy to go on attacking this novel (and rest assured it is a lot better than Under Orders)...
...and yet,it is difficult to put down.
Forget motives, insights, devices, dialogue, description - it gets you from A to B. It isn't really a holiday beach book,it is the book to start and finish in the Airport Departure Lounge when they announce your flight is delayed for a couple of hours. And if that is all you want and expect then it does the job superbly.
