It all takes so long to be heard!5
Dr Mackarness first published this fine book in 1976. "All in the Mind" was the result of observations made about how our diets affect us. The idea that there are food intolerances has recently made the news again. Food intolerances result in clinical and medical symptoms that cannot be easily traced to a particular food. The symptoms appear in a subtle way and may not be easy to identify. (Food allergies, on the other hand, often produce rapid symptoms, for example where nuts produce anaphylactic shock). This book not only identifies and defines food intolerance but also offers case studies and how to diagnose and treat patients. The style of writing also makes it very easy to read and understand. It is aimed at us, Joe and Josie Public. Not "All in the Mind" deserves to be described as ground breaking in terms of the audience it reaches and the subject matter. But why does it take so long for voices such as Dr Mackarness to be heard?

This book has transformed my life!5
the only issue i have with this book, is why the hell have the medical profession and government not listened to doctors like Dr Mackarness who wrote this in 1974, and who quotes evidence from doctors as early as the 1920s? The answer can only be that he is challenging all our preconceived ideas and probably more importantly, challengin our industrialised food production methods that make a lot of money. I feel 100% better for cutting out cereals from my diet. Both my mental health and my physical health have suffered in the past due to this allergy. I am now finally free, and healthier, more energetic and happier than I have ever been.

The book is basically about food allergies and their impact on both mental health and physical health. He suggests that in evolutionary terms our bodies are not adjusted to high cereal diets and dairy which have only been around for the last few hundred years (it takes thousands of years for our bodies to adjust to evolutionary changes). He suggests that up to 80% of the population are probably experiencing some type of food or chemical allergy due to eating highly processed food that are bodies are not yet adjusted to.

His case studies of transforming the symptoms of mental health patients including schitzophrenics are fascinating. He also suspects food allergy to be a major cause of obesity. It is not natural to eat too much. Something is going wrong with the type of food a person is eating if their appetite allows them to overeat. It has major pshychological impacts but it is highly likely that it is not caused by `emotional issues' but that their diet is the thing causing any emotional issues.

it's also pretty obvious to me that with rising obesity rates, the 'low fat, whole grain, lots of fruit and veg combined with exercise' is just not working for the majority of overweight people. Not because they are weak and greedy. I wish we could stop patronising overweight people and start looking into food and chemical allergies as possible causes.

If you have kids, you have a responsibility to read this book!

Highly recommended to all my clients5
When I read this book many years ago I was delighted to find that my problems cleared up completely, and it led me to study nutrition for the sake of my clients. Now this is probably the book I recommend most often to patients. As a counsellor and hypnotherapist I have found that many problems can be easily sorted out simply by a change in diet. I only wish more people in the medical profession sat up and took notice. G. Joubert
