A factional window on South African Political History
Although titled as fiction this is an incredibly eye opening account and comparison of the lifestyles, political opinions, attitudes and significant events that existed and occurred in and around the sixties in South Africa. I would rate this as one of the top five Wilbur Smith novels as it contains such meticulous and well researched content. As good if not better than a factual historical account of the beginnings of the black South African struggle for political power.
the star of the courtneys of afrika collection
A superb mix of class and culture, of race and origin in south afrike of old, hold the setting for this fast moving novel. Smith tells of heartbreak and racism through the eyes of the surpressed with such vivid realism that on some occasions this book becomes an almost morbid fascination. If read as part of the series as a whole this book is a gripping tale after very few pages.
Great book
I enjoyed this book immensely, but be warned, it is a novel in it's own right, but is best read as a part of a series. Smith has a talent for being very objective with the plights of the blacks in South Africa, and also the Afrikaner government. I look forward to reading Golden Fox.
