Product Description

The nightmare begins before you sleep....

He had fled from the terrors of his past, finding refuge in the quietness of the island. And for a time he lived in peace. Until the 'sightings' began, visions of horror seeping into his mind like poisonous tendrils, violent acts that were hideously macabre, the thoughts becoming intense.

He witnessed the grotesque acts of another thing, a thing that glorified in murder and mutilation, a monster that soon became aware of the observer within its own mind. And relished contact. A creature that would eventually come to the island to seek him out....

Where ever you run, you can't hide4
This is a classic James Herbert Book, from the plot to the characters and the writing style. It's edgy and tense with an unsettling dark thread featuring murder, mystery and paranormal abilities. The island setting and the descriptive passages combine to make you feel the pressure and check the windows and doors are shut! It's a jolly good read, but perhaps not late at night...on your own.

NOTHING TO MOON OVER...3
Having read "The Fog", an absolutely terrific book by this author, I looked forward to reading this one. I am sorry to say that this book does not even begin to compare to "The Fog", a book that is superior in every way to this effort.

[...]This book is mildly entertaining at best, as the tension does not really hold up. Moreover, the ending is somewhat ridiculous and disappointing, reminiscent of a promise unfulfilled. The author is certainly capable of better. If one is looking for a book of unrelenting horror, then this is not the book for which one is looking. It is more of a murder mystery with supernatural overtones, and a somewhat mediocre one, at that.

A good read with an interesting twist4
This book has had some quite scathing reviews on this website and indeed some of them are justified. It is not a classic nor is it completely original. What it is is extremely well written, engaging and possesses the ability to hold the reader right up to the great twist at the end. I read this book not expecting a classic or a highbrow read, I expected a good thrilling story with some moments of genuine horror and I found it. It would make a good introduction to James Herbert's writing and it would certainly make a good film.
