The title Nobody True is a complicated set of puns on its own plot; adman Jimmy True has no body because he was off on one of his regular astral jaunts when someone stuck him through the heart and carved him up like meat. His rather privileged position as an invisible observer of his own murder investigation enables him to discover uncomfortable truths about almost everyone he knows--his wife, his young daughter, his business partner--and a darker set of truths about the serial killer whose victim he appears to be. Jimmy has many problems with trust--his paranoid mother and absent father have seen to that--and at first his posthumous experiences confirm all his worst dreads. This is a book about learning valuable lessons and not thinking simple versions of the truth are necessarily the most accurate ones; it is among the most odd Herbert horror thrillers and like several of his best books has an attractive emotional core underneath all the gore and nightmare. Not Herbert's Best
I love James Herbert but this book was not one of his finest. It was slow to develop. Although, it was a good premise, the character spends way too much time rambling around in his out-of-body experience instead of taking action against his murderer. In some places, it was deeply disturbing, even for a horror fiction fan!!

totally enthralling read !!!!
This is the first book that I have read by James Herbert, attempting to escape the clutches of Stephen King.

Nobody true is the only book that kept my eyes glued to the pages, completely oblivious to the world around me. I was completely enthralled by the life of James True. The concept of living a life, outside the body, with no real substance, was utterly disturbing. I really began to feel for the character in his attempt to discover who murdered him whilst in his out of body experience. How do you protect the people you love when you cannot touch? The plot is full of twists that will leave you wondering the outcome right through to the very last page.
James Herbert is in a class of his own, making supernatural occurances become reality. It leaves you wondering what really does happen in death. This book really does make you feel extreme sympathy for James True in his lonely attempt to reveal the truth about his killer.
Read this book, as even people with extremely vivid imaginations will be shocked by the deeply disturbing events that are explored in this truly fantastic novel.

So many people have given this such low ratings- this is unfair!!

I have read most of James Herberts' books, and although a little different from his other stuff, this is exceptional. Right from beginning to end it had me hooked.

What really makes this book stand out is the ending... such powerful writing, it made me cry- a mean feat!
