Product Description

The formidable economic power and political influence the new Germany is likely to exert in Europe make more desirable than ever an understanding of its past. That is amply provided in the fourth edition of William Carr's highly praised 'History of Germany'.

The 1989-90 Revolution is the focus of a new chapter, while other parts of the book - over the entire period - have been revised thoroughly in the light of recent research.

Review
...this book remains the best single-volume history of modern Germany. --Teaching History

That the book has now entered its fourth edition is a great compliment to a historian whose work has not lost its relevance. It takes special skills to write a general history and Carr managed to avoid the dangers of such a project. He continuously focuses on the essential points and always aims at a balanced interpretation. These qualities make it an excellent textbook not only for undergraduate --South African Historical Journal

The history of Germany5
This is the most comprehensive single volume study available. The longstanding classic, it provides a whirlwind tour of 175 years of German history.

That said, it is very hard work and there are more 'exciting' studies available. If you have access to other books, or know at least some of the subject covered, this book is great as a reference and complement. If you are completely new to German history over this period (especially the early parts) then be prepared to have to look up many of the references Carr makes.

This book covers the advent of Restoration Europe after the downfall of Napoleon, through the unification of Germany, to its troubled 20th century history. First published in 1969, it has been repeatledly updated by the author, and remains the standard text.
