Essential book of note
A good introductory guide for music students taking BTEC National courses. I have made it a required textbook for my students taking National Diplomas in Popular Music and Music Technology. It covers most aspects of the industry to give the students a good starting point - it even mentions tax for the self-employed (how many musicians wish somebody had told them about that when they were in college?).
There are a few holes in the history of popular music section and there is perhaps a need for a new edition - music technology is constantly moving on. All in all a good introduction for BTEC National and AS level students.
Overview of music suitable for education (AS/BTEC/HND)
A comprehensive guide to all aspects of music; historical, technological, business.
As a teacher of AS level Music Technology I have found this book indispensable. Some of the sections are of necessity quite brief - but it has been a great starting point for musical subjects I have little knowledge of, providing useful structures for scheme of work planning.
My one complaint is that I can never understand why a book from the UK mentions 'Tin Pan Alley' in the US but makes no mention of the UK Music Hall scene which was important in the development of popular music, its songs and personalities.
Extremley useful. Recommended.
