Customer Reviews

Practical and sensible guide4
Faced, today, with such a proliferation of books promising to Impart The Secrets Of The Craft, choosing who to listen to can be daunting, even impossible. Yet the aspiring Witch is unlikely to have a seasoned practitioner in easy reach from whom to seek advice; most of us have little option but to rely on books, at least to begin with.

In light of this, you can do a great deal worse than pick up a copy of Moorey's book, if you can find it. This remains one of the best short introductions to Witchcraft (and, to an extent, to many of the concepts of modern Paganism, too) out there: clearly-written, non-nonsense, filled with practical advice on how to celebrate and live your beliefs - rather than sitting around with a pentagram and a few joss sticks, feeling faintly cheated. For the poetically-challenged of us, there are also nicely-expressed suggested verses for sabbats and esbats.

At every stage it is practical, helpful, and (hurrah!) largely non-fluffy. Recommended.

Witchcraft: A Beginner's Guide5
The 'Beginner's Guide' series as a whole is great. This particular one is very helpful to anyone either starting out on the Path of Witchcraft, or for anyone who KNOWS someone who is a Witch. It's question & answer format means the reader is drawn into the subject gently & easily, allaying any fears that they may have. Although it only really gives a 'taster', it does recommend further reading (which is a given in any book on this subject). I've found this book handy when asked a barrage of questions about my Path. Once a person has read it, it can trigger other questions which need to be asked & can be a stepping off point for discussion within family & friend circles. A must-have!

An excellent starting point for newcomers and loved ones5
Teresa Moorey has excelled herself with this informative and accessible Beginner's Guide. She sets out the basics of modern Witchcraft (particularly Wicca) in a simple, unpatronising and readable fashion that manages to both inform the reader of the basic tenets of the Craft, and dispel the fear and misunderstanding usually attached to the subject of Paganism and nature-worship.

I first came across this book when my partner, after our first discussion concerning my religion, decided to go out and buy himself a 'primer' to understand what it was all about. He came back with the 'Beginner's Guide', read it in two days, and felt relieved and enlightened on a subject he had previously known nothing about. Four years later, I'm still handing this book to friends, parents, colleagues... anyone who doesn't know much about modern witchcraft, but expresses a desire to find out more.

You can forget all those dire 'Be A Trendy 'Wicked' Witch In 7 Days'-style handbooks: you'll be wasting your money. I'd recommend this book to anyone starting out (and I mean for all the right reasons) on the Wiccan/ Pagan path, or those who have friends or relations that will benefit from having an intelligent publication to allay their fears and put their minds at rest. Don't buy any more trashy 'spellbooks'. Read, learn, and walk in peace. Brightest blessings.
