Customer Reviews
Clearly laid out, readable, interesting
I have read a lot of 'literature' from this period, e.g. Barker's Regeneration, and have become increasingly interested in finding out about the reasons for the war and the factual conditions of trench life, etc. I would not normally read a history book for pleasure but found this to be easy to read because it is so clearly organized. The 'facts' are presented in an objective way; they are also interspersed with personal accounts from autobiographical accounts, letters, etc. Brendon tries to show the reader that Germany's defeat was by no means a certainty. She examines the social, economic and political reasons for the war as well which I found useful. There are also helpful diagrams and maps which are good for visualizing the sheer size and scale of the contest. I was very impressed with this book. If I was a student or teacher of History, I might think that this book would be an excellent resource.
