This text covers the content of all the main specifications for the main AS chemistry course. It aims to make the subject memorable, interesting and accessible. The text is divided into seven sections, each of which is further subdivided into topics. The first section links the AS course to material students will be familiar with from GCSE chemistry. The later sections build on this knowledge by presenting the material in a clear, concise manner and relating theory to practice throughout. The wider importance of each topic is explained along with details of how it relates to other topics in chemistry. Included in the text are case studies which use familiar examples to help motivate pupils, worked examples and practice questions, revision and examination tips and "maps" which help establish links and give an overall view.

Review
Clearly written for AS students, with a modern "feel". I look up many key items - all there, and well explained and illustrated -- Mr Brown, Wymondham High School, Norfolk 20010901 This book has a clear, structured and traditional approach. The text is well laid out and easy to read, but formal rather than conversational! The book is divided into six sections, Studying chemistry, Foundations, Physical, Inorganic, Organic and Reference. Down each margin are notes that emphasis the points that students frequently confuse (useful for NQTs), test yourself questions and references to the accompanying CD-ROM. The test questions start out as routine practice and quickly become quite demanding! Each chapter has a review, which includes a list of terms, facts, patterns and principles, laboratory techniques and key skills. This is a helpful checklist to students for revision. The book is well illustrated with relevant colour photographs. ..This resource provides all the knowledge required for the traditional AS chemistry syllabuses. Teachers of other syllabuses such as Salters' and Nuffield would find the text a worthwhile library reference source. -- Education in Chemistry 20011101
About the Author
Andrew Hunt co-ordinates the work of the Nuffield Curriculum Projects Centre which has a portfolio of about a dozen curriculum projects mainly in the areas of Science, Design and Technology and Mathematics. Andrew was a founder member and director of the Association for Science Education's SATIS project. This project promoted the public understanding of science through the school curriculum and spanned the 5 - 19 age range. The project built up an international reputation and Andrew has led teacher training workshops based on SATIS approaches in many countries in Europe, America, Southern Africa and the Asia-Pacific region. This interest continues with the development of a new AS course called 'Science for Public Understanding'. Andrew was a science teacher in a variety of 11 - 18 schools for 20 years and in that time wrote a number of successful chemistry textbooks. He continues to write texts for the school and college curriculum. Andrew is part of the management team for another ASE project called Science across the World. This project creates opportunities for students in schools all over the world to explore issues related to science in society and then exchange their findings with students in other countries by fax or e-mail. Andrew is a vice-president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science with responsibility for the BA's young people's programme.

Good Explanations for harder AS level concepts in chemistry
i have only been using this book for short period of time, and it has proved very valuable in making the transition from GCSE chemistry level to AS level standard. It links the information together very well, and is easy to understand as it is divided into short chapters. Very good for those who are struggling to understand the harder concepts of chemistry in AS Level.
good stuff!
i am doing as level chem and i find it hard! and its only the 1st module and i no im not the only 1. this book is really valuble and i have used it for a few days. i would reccomend it becuase the cource material books (chemicals ideas and chemical storylines for me) are ultra confusing. this book spreads it out easily and as u have a basic foundationd from doing a bit of work this peices all the little bits together and makes sence of it all. for me it worth spending £4 on. the review from the person above is proberbly a teacher who does not agree with this type of learing becuase it is easy learing. a book worth the £4 and i am deffinetly going to order mine as i read two chapers of it and understood what took 2 and a half weeks of school work to understand x
Not especially helpful for AQA Exams.
This is not a great AS Level Chemistry book. Yes, it provides you with some useful background info when you are studying at the start of AS Chemistry after taking GCSE but for revision and actual study, it can only be described as almost useless for the important and less basic of facts/equations/etc. It merely fills the gap of your Summer Holidays before college/sixth form.
