This title provides a stimulating survey of the developments in warfare over the last three centuries. The author adopts a thematic approach highlighting a number of consistent factors that play an important role in all periods of warfare. These include leadership, the men in the army, weaponry, tactics and strategy, and the financing of war with its implications for the state providing these funds. Customer Reviews

Excellent introduction to history5
Clearly written and with enough depth to satisfy, this book both educates and provides an excellent starting point for further research. Covering such a long period in a relatively short book is not easy, but Stewart successfully manages to highlight the major themes and events which shaped advances in military technology and thinking over two centuries. Anyone studying military history or any modern historical course with a warfare component would do well to get hold of this book.
