Editorial Reviews

Review
A more traditional textbook with three main sections on Physical, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry and a comprehensive reference section at the end. But the accompanying CD-ROM (from New Media, tel: 01491 413999) and website (www.a2chemistry.co.uk) make this an up-to-date package. This well-written text, illustrated throughout with copious diagrams and pictures, sets a very high standard. Both the inorganic and organic sections begin with general principles before going on to systematic group chemistry. There are plenty of worked examples, opportunities to “Test yourself” (answers given) and each section ends with a useful study guide to aid revision. (Times Educational Supplement )

Synopsis
A2 Chemistry follows on from the successful AS Chemistry, which was published in 2000. A2 Chemistry covers the content of all the main A2 specifications. The text has been divided into four sections, which cover the three main areas of Chemistry (Physical, Inorganic and Organic) as well as a Reference section at the end. Each of the sections is subdivided into manageable topics. A2 Chemistry aims to guide students through the transition between AS and A2 level, allowing them to grasp the more complex details and greater depth of content at this higher level. The material is presented in a clear, concise manner with many photographs and diagrams to facilitate learning. Test Yourself questions consolidate what has been learnt at AS and allows student's to build on their understanding. The wider importance of each topic is explained along with details of how it relates to other topics in chemistry.

About the Author
My job is to co-ordinate the work of the Nuffield Curriculum Projects Centre which has a portfolio of about a dozen curriculum projects mainly in the areas of Science, Design and Technology and Mathematics. I am also a vice-president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science with responsibility for the BA's young people's programme.

I was a science teacher in a variety of 11 - 18 schools for 20 years until the mid-eighties and in that time I wrote a number of successful chemistry textbooks. In 1988 I was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry Award in Chemical Education.

I was a founder member and director of the Association for Science Education's SATIS project to promoted the public understanding of science through the school curriculum. This interest continues with the development of a new AS course called `Science for Public Understanding'.

I am also part of the management team for another ASE project called Science across the World which creates opportunities for students in schools all over the world to explore issues related to science in society and then exchange their findings with students in other countries by fax or e-mail.
