Product Description

Mary Vine believes her luck has changed. After surviving her first nineteen years, fiercely defending her chaotic family against anyone who dares criticise them, she has found happiness at last with her fiancé, submariner Michael Miller.

Cissie Nugent has lost her position as housemaid and is surviving by selling her body to passing sailors. But she has further to fall as she is betrayed by the only person she has ever trusted.

Captain Charles Clements, once the employer of both Mary and Cissie, returns to Portsmouth after a humiliating divorce. Though a hero of Jutland, he must find a new sort of courage to face a future without his family.

Soon the lives of Mary, Cissie and Captain Clements will change for the better in unexpected ways.

Praise for WAITING FOR THE TIDE:

‘A rich first novel . . . packed with interesting people living what might appear to be mundane lives, but of course they are not. Great 'Tide'ings! Another wonderful read5
This is the latest in the marvellous series of books by Julia Bryant which began with 'Waiting for the Tide'.

Even if you haven't read any of the others, this evocative story of Portsmouth and its naval history will be immensely satisying.

This is the tale of Mary, a fiercely-independent young woman struggling with her own fiery nature. Will she be able to settle to married life with Michael, the man she loves? He is a submariner and she fears for him, and is very conscious of the 'social' distance that separates them.

And will she ever be able to detach herself from the quarrelsome family that she loves, and despairs of, in equal measure?

Julia Bryant's especial gift is to bring to life the characters who populate these docks and their surroundings in the early part of the twentieth century. You are effortlessly drawn into their lives and dreams.

Enjoy!
