Synopsis
Although it is easy to write and administer questionnaires or to carry out interviews, there are so many potential pitfalls in the design, execution and analysis processes that few surveys give valid results in practice. In order to carry out statistical research properly, the principles behind the design, choice of study population, sampling, sample size, dealing with non-response, questionnaires or interview designs and analysis must be thoroughly understood. Unfortunately, few of those who supervise or carry out statistical research understand these principles. Therefore, there is a need for a general book which targets those new to the topic and outlines these principles in simple language. The text aims to address and fulfil this lack.
