Eleven-year-old Dina has just discovered she has inherited her mother's gift - when people look into her eyes, they are forced to acknowledge all their weaknesses and guilt. It is an unhappy gift, though; people shy away from contact with Dina, and believe her mother is a witch. Dina's mother has just begun to teach her how to use her power wisely when she is called away by the Lawgiver of the Court of the Ravens, to aid in the detection of the murderer of four members of the royal family. Dina's mother does not return the next day. Instead, Dina is fetched by a stranger, Drakan; finding him able to look into her eyes calmly and innocently, she goes with him. But, arriving at the House of the Ravens, she finds her mother captive, and she herself no more than a pawn in a terrifying game of blackmail. Terrified, Dina escapes. But she is pitted against an implacable enemy: Drakan and his army of dragons...

'Full of passion'
From the Publisher
Fans of Tanith Lee's 'Wolf Tower' series will relish the drama of Dina's adventure and enjoy her witty, sharp narrative.
An impressive and original fantasy, rich in ideas and meaning, with memorable characters and a vivid setting. A page-turning read from an exciting writer - her first novel to be published in English.
Look out for the independent sequel, 'The Shamer's Signet', also published by Hodder.

Spectacular & Gripping!
A friend of mine suggested this book for its use of detail, and it is wonderful-- I'm so jealous of Kaaberbol's use of English because she has translated her own books from the original Danish. I can only imagine how good it is in the original language. This series is quality and a must-read-- I'm sure that it will become very popular over the year with word-of-mouth. It is hard to put them down (so far, the 2nd and 3rd are just as good as the 1st), and the characters are so real despite an imaginary world.
Kaaberbol is right: in the center of every fantasy is truth, and that is what makes her books so gripping and hard to put down.
