The new editions of Access to Historycombine all the strengths of this well-loved series with a new design and features that allow all students access to the content and study skills needed to achieve exam success.
This Third Edition of this popular title has been updated to reflect the needs of the current A Level specifications. The title examines reasons why progress towards unification was so slow at first and why after 1850 it became so speedy. In doing so, it gives due attention to the roles played by Cavour, Mazzini, Garibaldi, Pope Pius IX, Napoleon III, Charles Albert and Victor Emmanuel, and attempts to answer the question 'Who made Italy?'.
Throughout the book key dates, terms and issues are highlighted, and historical interpretations of key debates are outlined.
Summary diagrams are included to consolidate knowledge and understanding of the period, and exam style questions and tips for each examination board provide the opportunity to develop exam skills.

Customer Reviews
If you want full marks, this is the book for you.
Don't listen to the moronic poster who rated this two stars. I used this book and this book alone for my AS-Level "Italian Unification" exam, and achieved full marks.
It's a comprehensive guide to all the key subject areas, and offers not only a detailed chronological account, but plenty of analysis and evaluation, with exam style questions and model answers to boot.
AS revision
overall this book is very useful. i am currently studying for my AS levels and this book makes it easy to learn the facts and understand the events which occured. The book includes helpful references to modern historians and gives you a wide opinion on the events that took place during the unification era.
Unification? Let's leave that for later... (Mini Review)
As part of my AS History further reading, Stiles and Pearce's Unification to Italy was designed to prove invaluable reading aiding me in my quest for more knowledge on Italian unity. Unfortunately it is vastly oversimplified and often very biased towards conservative ideas at the time.
My Dad's yellowing tomes offer more access and depth of information than this easy read and whilst it is very accessable for students who have never studied History before, they cannot expect to attain any grade higher than a C for their first exam which may be slightly disappointing.
I would not recommend this book because it offers only the basic facts (my teacher said it was used at GCSE level before) and if the student wants to get that A, they will have to use this only as reference or to build a framework of events. It's excellent, however, for those who want to create a simple of idea of what went on at the time but only in so much detail. Not recommended.
