‘Who’re you working for then, Warshawski?’ ‘My cousin.’ ‘Boom Boom? He’s dead.’ ‘I know. That’s why I’m working for him.’ Boom Boom’s body was found floating near the docks, chewed up and spat out by a ship’s propeller. More like brother and sister than cousins, Vic and Boom Boom looked out for each other. Boom Boom grew up to be an ice hockey hero, and Vic a private eye. And now V I Warshawski would like to know how, exactly, her cousin died . . .

Review
Praise for Fire Sale, Warshawski's latest outing
(: )'How enjoyable to settle down with a new book by Sara Paretsky.'
(Sunday Telegraph )‘With the creation of V.I. Warshawski, Sara Paretsky did more than anyone to change the face of contemporary women’s fiction.’ (Express on Sunday )
'Warshawski's darkest outing, with no sign that her creator is flagging. Paretsky has written a novel in which a great deal is stripped bare, including Warshawski's innermost anxieties about herself, producing a narrative as gripping as it is emotionally wrenching.'
(JOAN SMITH, Sunday Times )
About the Author

Deadlocked, but not dead in the water.
This book is VI Warshawski doing what she does best, getting in way over her head and loving every minute of it. She's smart, sassy, innovative and like a dog with a bone she just won't let go. When her cousin Boom Boom falls to his death at the docks where he works VI just can't accept that it was an 'accident' as the police would have her believe. No sooner does she start digging a little deeper into the business dealings of the shipping company for whom Boom Boom worked does she get results. As she moves ever closer towards the reason why her cousin ended up at the bottom of Lake Michigan, she finds herself face to face with a dead body in Boom Boom's apartment and then almost winds up dead when her car is tampered with. Someone doesn't want her getting any closer to the reason behind his death, but who? As the story unfolds we learn more about the people in Boom Boom's life and the action is non stop, VI is our tour guide and she does not fail to deliver.
Reading about VI so enjoyable because she is such a determined, capable but essentially flawed character. Along with all the action we are allowed to peek into VI's unconventional lifestyle and her chequered past. She is a herioc, albeit gun toting, female detective of whom I look forward to reading more about in the future.
