Review
"Excellent"

From the Author
A cheap and cheerful introduction to geology?
I am pleased with how this book has been received. It is proving popular as a simple general text for folk early in their study of geology, and is recommended as preparatory reading for various extramural classes and several Open University Earth Science courses. Some students have been kind enough to say that my book is easier and clearer to read than these too! There are plenty of other books that cover similar ground, but they are bigger and considerably more expensive.
About the Author
David Rothery is a volcanologist, geologist, planetary scientist and Senior Lecturer at the Open University. His international collaborative research on active volcanoes has taken him to places as diverse as Hawaii, the Americas, Indonesia and Italy.
Customer Reviews
An excellent introduction to geology.
Teach Yourself Geology gives an excellent introduction to the subject, written to be accessible to the interested amateur, but with enough detail to provide a solid introduction to the subject for scientists from other areas of research. It will be enjoyed by readers from any background. In all, an excellent book which I highly recommend.
An excellent introduction to geology
This contains just about everything the beginner needs to get a feel for modern geology. As ever, one would like to see more on particular topics (e.g. rock types and how the British scenery has been formed), but within the confines of its length, I think the author has done a splendid job of presenting a balanced, informative, and up-to-date introduction. Excellent value.
Excellent introduction to geology
This book is an excellent introduction to geology for the interested amateur. Not only does it explain geological theory and processes in a clear, concise way, but it also gives practical advice for undertaking your own field trips.
Additionally, this is one of the companion books recommended for the Open University geology course S260 (and in fact David Rothery wrote some of the material for this course too!). If you are thinking about taking this course, then a good plan would be to buy this book, and also Teach Yourself Volcanoes, and to read them during the winter before you start the course - this will give you a solid headstart and introduce you to many of the concepts you will be meeting in your studies.
I agree with a previous reviewer that the book would be improved by a more detailed study of minerals, but as it is pitched as an introductory text it really cannot be faulted in this regard.
