I couldn't put the book down!!
I have followed B5 from the beginning and am still of the opinion that it is the best sci-fi series ever written. Hence any chance to return to the universe and its characters is always welcome. Crusade was a let down, but one character who was interesting was Galen. This book follows his story from when he is initiated to become a mage. The story is well written and hangs together well. The part at the end when ...... nearly made me cry and I felt a little sick with sadness. Such was the writers ability to draw you to the characters and make you care what happens. It all ties very well within the B5 universe as you would expect when JMS has set the guidelines. I cannot wait for the next two books!!!!
And So The Techno-Mage Trilogy Begins...
I was sceptical when I heard the third trilogy of B5 books was going to be about the techno-mages as I feared there wouldn't be much of a story with the end result of their solitary appearance in The Geometry Of Shadows, but I was wrong. There is more to the techno-mages than could be imagined.
Jeanne Cavelos has written a fantastic piece of fiction which manages to be examine the events of the first season of Babylon 5 from the point of view of the techno-mages. The central characters Galen and Elric are exceptionally well written and Cavelos ensures that they are true to their television personas but developed more for the novel. The character of Isabelle, hinted at in the Crusade episode The Well of Forever, is a well created character and there's even an appearance by the sinister Mr. Morden as well.
This is an excellent book. Although it doesn't feature any of the main characters from B5, it weaves it's own strong story which is a delight from start to finish.
Enjoyable to no end....
I got the book a while a go, had some other books I was reading though and left it on my desk collecting dust. Picked up the book a few days ago and have read it all. I could not put the thing down. Great plot, nice descriptions which explained the unexplainable and gave a great insight into the history of one of my favourite B5 characters (Galen). I enjoyed the introductions to the other technomages, which was done quite well. The description of Anna was amazing, as well as the Vorlon transport reacting to Kosh. Can't wait for the next books.
And now onto the things I disliked. With B5, everyone seems to focus on the Shadows, I understand they play a major role but many overlook the Vorlons. They're my favourite race and I just wish someone would write in detail more about them. Psi-Corps trilogy had a little about the Vorlons, Centauri had precious little and this trilogy seems to be going the same way. Although the book 2 cover art looks promising. Little is ever told of the Vorlons, which is dissapointing to me. B5 was focused on the Shadows, Crusade was focused on the Shadows and now it seems the series to be 'Rangers' is revolving around the Shadows aftermath. This is just a petty preferance though, I thoroughly enjoy all of B5... I was just looking for something that would break off from what the TV series focused on.
I really suggest reading it for yourself though.
