Allston keeps on top form
After the success of Rebel Dream it would have been easy to let the standard slip a little in Rebel Stand, but Allston really understands these characters and this shows in this book again. By being the great SW writer that he is Allston has produced another top notch book. We get to see the fighting spirit of Wedge and The Rogues again. Along with the re-emergence of Han Solo's scoundrel ways. While it's true that this book doesn't answer "The Jacen Question" that is never its intent. This book is about as close to the X-Wings series as a NJO book could ever be and the battle scenes, undercover missions and pilot relationships are all beautifully described. Put simply this book along with Rebel Dream are probably the two best NJO's yet!
A brilliant follow up to Rebel Dawn
Well this book took what was started in Rebel Dawn and built on it very successfuly in my eyes.
Aaron has continued to build on the story line he started regarding the defense of Borleais and the insertion of a team back onto Coruscant, and has brought both of those story lines to a end whilst setting up some intresting new lines to be explored.
I was a little disappionted with how the characters where dealt with in this novel, Aaron has pretty much left them alone and not developed them beyond hinting that a couple of old issues now seem to be resolved (Han and Leia, Jania / Kyp and Jag.)
Thou this has been more than made up for by the way he has dealt with some of the events of Rebel Dawn, the setting up of the resistance network, what and how the pipe fighters work. It also takes the minor victory won in RD and turns that into a major victory but one that is won at a very large cost (basicaly its not something that they are going to be able to pull off again). Also something very intresting has happened on Courscant but Aaron hasn't really told us how (or if) that is going to change things but i find it unlikely that it won't.
All in all this book has created as many new questions as old ones it has answered, part of me is annoyed about that. I was hoping for something a bit more definite as in the earlier duoliges in the NJO series were they where almost self contained stories. However Aaron is a very readable author and this is a very enjoyable novel.
As I have said on other reviews of NJO books, if you are reading the series then you will enjoy this novel, if you aren't then go and start at the begining with Vector Prime and enjoy. You won't be disappionted.
Han and Leia are back!
The way Aaron Allston writes about Han and Leia... it's like they're back again! They're witty, dry-humored, and they understand one another again. After all they've been through.
Allston writes in a way that makes you sit on the edge of your chair just like in a movie theater!
His characters Face and Kell are enormously funny... you just gotta love these guys, naming them Poster boy and Explosives Boy they are true Wraiths! Gotta love it.
