United Nations Soldiers of Fortune
Mr Lanning has omitted entirely a very modern Hessian type of soldiers for hire by their political leaders.
I served with the United States Sinai Field Mission in the Sinai Desert from 1975 to 1983 under the auspices sof the United States State Department.
I served along side several battalions of foreign combat soldiers rented to the United Nations for duty in keeping the peace of the Camp David Accords in the Sinai Desert.
Among these periodically rotating battalions I particularly remember the Finnbatt from Finland, the Fugibatt from Fugi and the Nigeriabatt from Nigeria, Africa. I had long discussion with some of their officers most of which spoke excellent English about their role.
Each indicated that their country of origin had sold their service for large amounts of money to the United Nations. They, themselves were also handsomely rewarded monitarily. The Fugi soldiers particularly mention that the money paid by the United Nations was the source of a large part of their country's economy. These men were also allowed to send large amounts of consurer goods back to their families and that service in these continuously rotating batallions was highly sought after. One Nigerian officer told me that he had sent several refrigerators home to Nigeria although there was no elecritcity in his home village. He was banking on the hope that there someday would be.
As I read Lannings description of the terms of the sale of Hession military service by the German princes to the English king for duty a world away I wondered why these modern day Soldiers of Fortune were not mentioned.
This book, MERCENARIES, will be placed in my large and growing library on all aspects and viewpoints of war.
I recommend this book to all serious students jof war.
Regards,
Carl W. Lundquist, Colonel, Army of the United States (Retired)
