Customer Reviews
a very good book with an african flavour
This is a beautiful book of african prayers, poems and litanies chosen by Archbishop Desmond Tutu (some were written by him).Included are the gems of Africa's vast and varied history-prayers of St Augustine of Hippo,St Maconius and St Athanasius;excerpts from the Anglican,Methodist,Egyptian Coptic and Ethiopian Orthodox litany;there are contributions from grassroots movements such as the Crossroads Squatters Colony (Cape Town),and even the South African National Service of Thanksgiving, which celebrated the end of apartheid in 1994. Also included are many prayers from the various African tribes which give the book an African flavour. Many of the prayers have a beautiful simplicity and appeal in their many allusions to the African way of life.Fishing and famine, hunting and harvest, rains and fire, warm skies and the night sky, rocks and hills, rivers and dust, the bush and the roads, drums and silence are all there.Included too are the suffering, oppression and racism which were so much a part of life in South Africa until recently and which still are.
A great worship resource
A superb resource. Great selection of prayers, meditations and bible passages. Used it to create a worship session inspired by African music and words and it was enthusiastically received. Prayers were particularly well received.
