Is this the greatest poem in the English language? Quite possibly. It is a magnificent, varied and utterly human and humane journey through loss, despair, reconciliation and acceptance and has some of the best crafted poetry in the language within its mighty scope.
Tennyson isn't very fashionable at the moment: but why would you be so stupid as to think that might have any bearing on his greatness. Let us not forget that Pam Ayres is still the best-selling poet in the country. Fact.
