Preface, Introduction and Notes by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Afterword by Barbara A. White The first novel ever written by a black American, this fusion of the sentimental novel and the slave narrative, first published in 1859, was neglected until it recently became the subject of renewed scholarly interest. Customer Reviews

A must have!4
What an amazing book. autobiographical? who knows? but a fantastic depiction of racism and slavery through the eyes of a young girl. The book gives you the reader a section at the end, where the writter taks directly to you. The first book to be published by a black women in america. A must have if interested in cultural history and racism. Or stdying English Literature. It sometimes lacks in detail, but who can expect more form an uneducated black girl living under those circumstance. A quick, thourough, emotional read.
