A revelation!
At last - a book that actually explains sensory processing disorder (and sensory modulation disorder) in a way that everyone can understand. Lucy Jane Miller writes in an open and honest way, giving parents and carers exact information without overloading on technical jargon.
After reading this fantastic book despair is slowly ebbing away and light can be seen at the end of the tunnel!!
Not sure how useful this is...
I was recommended to this book by an American friend who son (adopted) has been 'diagnosed' (by the institute concerned) as having sensory problems. If pathways in the brain are not fully developed, either due to problems in the womb or premature birth this leads to developmental issues - So far, so mainstream. However, the book left me confused - it uses long stories to illustrate the behaviour. I couldn't find much hard data. It is also based on US experience so the stories are in US schools, the resources US based. Some of the problems described are actually of socialisation - self pacing, working off excess energy, and I suspect that some are problems of American child rearing practices (eg. 12 hours a day in large nurseries from very young age, even for vulnerable children). Whilst suggested website resources are accessible from all the world, much of the rest was not useful. I was left with the impression that it puts many learning and development difficulties into clusters - which seems very 'catch all'.
I suspect one would be better to look for specific books on specific learning and developmental difficulties.
For those struggling with behaviour that is not quite autism or ADHD, this book might hold some answers
My son is going through assessment for a Sensory disorder, and this book helped me understand what it is, and what behaviour this relates to. This book is clearly set out and explains everything in laymans terms, giving diagrams and check lists to help you identify if your child falls into any of the different sensory disorder possiblities. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs clarity on these ideas, which are new - but are thankfully moving away from labelling every child with ADHD or Autism.
