The Stanislavski 'system' is still the only comprehensive method of actor training we possess. It is studied in schools and universities as well as professional theatre schools. The aim of this book is to show the slow growth of the 'system', from its roots in the tradition of Russian realism, and to chart the various phases it went through until the final emergence of the Method of Physical Action in the years before his death. It also provides a short account of the writing, publication and translation of his books on acting.

An excellent introductory guide to the work of Stanislavski
This book gives an invaluable account of the methods by which Stanislavski worked. Written in a style that is both fluent and informative, it explores the elements of the 'system' in a manner in which it is easy to read and understand. Ideal for first time students of Stanislavski's work. I would recommend this book to all, especially those who encounter Stanislavski at A-Level.
A book for students
Stanislavski is probably the greatest practitoners who ever lived, this book is almost like a biography. Explaining the reasons for which he became a practitioner, although very interesting i feel it is a book for those studying Stanislavski. I studied Stanislavski at school and this book would have been very useful, therefore if you know anyone studying Stanislavski, give them this book as a belated Christmas present. It'll be worth their while.
