Unlike anything you will have ever read!5
Along with Ballards 'Crash' and Burroughs 'Naked Lunch', this is one of those books that it is essential to read. With it's own language ('Droogs' 'Yarbles' and 'In out, in out') and is heavy tales of crime and punishment, this is both disturbing and thought provoking. In a future society a gang of young men cruise the countryside causing rape and having fights. After finally being caught by the police, they are subjected to tests which prevent them from even thinking of voilence. When released into the world again however they find people capitilising on them at every opertunity and it isn't long before one of them winds up back at the house of the women he raped, how procedde to torture him. Without giving the ending away, Kubrik fell out with Burgess by not including a scene at the end where Alex decides that he does not want to commit crime anymore - he has progressed to adulthood. For me this final chapter was what the book was all about and Kubrik made a real error excluding it. However, as the film is now legal in this country, read the book first. It is quite difficult in places, but is worth progressing with to the end. Highly moralistic, a worthy addition to any reader who likes to read serious and improtant fiction.
