Editorial Reviews

Review
'This is the only comprehensive study of Mill's Utilitarianism which I would recommend to students as a reliable guide.' - John Skorupski, University of St. Andrews

From the Back Cover
Mill was one of the most important British philosophers of the nineteenth century; his Utilitarianism is a pivotal work in ethical thought. This book, written specifically for students coming to Mill - and perhaps philosophy - for the first time, will be an ideal guide.
Mill on Utilitarianism introduces and assesses:
* Mill's life and the background of Utilitarianism
* the ideas and text of Utilitarianism
* the continuing importance of Mill's work to philosophy
This is the first book dedicated to Utilitarianism itself. Concisely written and engaging, it is perfect reading for those studying Mill or moral philosophy.

Customer Reviews

A must for students reading Utilitarianism5
Crisp's companion to Mill's Utilitarianism deserves a place on the reading list of every student reading the text. The guidebook covers all of the main issues that arise from reading Mill's original text, and although its analysis is at times a little too sympathetic to Mill, it certainly serves as a useful platform for further study.

In particular, this guidebook shines through its incorporation of examples and interpretations employed by the likes of Williams, Parfit and Nozick. Crisp manages to boil down what are often complexes theses into approachable discussions. This makes it particularly useful for revision purposes.

Highly recommended.
