From the Back Cover
Max Frisch's Andorra is a frightening investigation of a nation's conscience. Andri, the central character, is the illegitimate son of a teacher who has chosen to pass him off as a Jew whom he saved as a child from the neighbouring anti-semitic `Blacks'. The play shows how the Andorrans project onto Andri their preconceived ideas of what a Jew should be, and how in due course he himself recognises such `Jewish' features within him. Following an invasion by the `Blacks', the Andorrans allow Andri to be brutally murdered - despite the truth surrounding his origins having now been revealed. The play consists of twelve scenes. Between each of these one of the Andorrans protests his innocence to an imaginary court. The audience, aware of the real situation at an early stage, is forced into judging human behaviour during a critical period of European history. Andorra was written between 1958 and 1961. This new edition, revised with the needs of today's students in mind, contains: A completely revised introduction, and fully updated bibliography Substantially broadened and improved annotation An expanded vocabulary section Incorporation of Frisch's own comments about the play (he made more observations about Andorra than any other play) Questions about all aspects of the play
Customer Reviews
The story is excellent, but the intro is just Zzzzzz......
As an A-Level German student, I was a bit nervous reading ANDORRA as part of the course. But, this version of the book is set out very clearly and very concisely. There is a particular dialect of german used here, which is the native tongue of Max Frisch, himself from Switzerland. So the editors have a translation section at the bottom of every page, for all those phrases and words that might prove different to comment on in an exam. My teacher thought it was great, that we all knew the plot, but I bought the english version, as well! I knew the plot exactly, but I wasn't foolish enough to not read the text in german, as this is what is required in the exam.
The introduction had, in my opinion very little to do with the book, more background into Anti-Semitism, a recurring theme in the story. But, don't let me spoil it for you. If you are studying, or are learning German and wish to improve, why not get this book. I felt I would have been missing out if I hadn't of read this, because the story is so enriching, full of good morals, etc. BUY IT & READ IT!!!
