From the Back Cover
Although much has been written on the nature of history and its disciplinary problems, less attention has been paid to the history of thought. M.C. Lemon's rigorously philosophical work first re-asserts the discipline of history in general as narrative-based, before the pursuing the methodological implications for the history of thought. The appeal of M.C. Lemon's approach lies in its direct treatment of questions like the logic of narrative explanation, questions which other philosophers of history have tended to skirt around. Using political thought as an example, the activity of thinking, rather than `ideas', is focused on, and the communication of thought is then analysed, based partly on the observation that not all that is thought is said, and not all that is said is the product of thinking. M.C. Lemon concludes by raising questions regarding the status as real historical phenomena of intellectual movements such as the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. This original work of scholarship will provoke debate and raise the level of argument in philosophy of history. THE DISCIPLINE OF HISTORY AND THE HISTORY OF THOUGHT
