Review
'Herrschel and Newman's timely book provides an excellent introduction to European city-regions and city-regional planning. This book is up-to-date, comprehensive and successfully integrates theoretical and policy considerations. It will be valuable reading for students, researchers and practitioners.' - Stuart Wilks-Heeg, University of Liverpool, UK
'Although there has been considerable interest in the alleged demise of the nation state and the apparent re-scaling of state power simultaneously 'upwards' to the European level and 'downwards' to cities and their regions, very little empirical evidence has been provided to confirm or refute the existence of such tendencies. Jonas, University of Hull, UK

In addition to these differences, national constitutional contexts constrain regional and local governments, and local political and cultural force
