Editorial Reviews

Review
'This study of Japanese fiction ... makes plain the literary effects of Japan's own experience of foreign domination. That Molasky is sensitive not just to the political contents of this literature, but to its racial, sexual and gender import as well, speaks to the breadth of his critical acumen - not to mention the depth of the Japanese colonial experience itself.' - - John Whittier Treat, University of Washington/Seattle.

'Molasky's excellent study of Japanese occupation literature is thoroughly researched, well written, and contributes substantially to our understanding of an extremely important but heretofore largely neglected area of postwar Japanese literature.' - The Journal of Asian Studies

'The American Occupation of Japan and Okinawa: Literature and Memory is a definitive work, the result of a Herculean task. Researchers for years to come will be indebted by this groundbreaking project.' - H-Japan

'The American Occupation of Japan and Okinawa: Literature and Memory, is brilliantly realistic from a diverse range of historical, sociological and literary perspectives'- Wendy Ella Wright, electronic journal of contemporary japanese studies , 2007

From the Back Cover
This book is an exploration, through literature, of Japan's experience of American military occupation. It provides textual analysis and discussions of post-war history, and juxtaposes literature from men and women, by writers from mainland Japan and Okinawa. The author examines whether Japanese womens' writing provides a counter-history to predominantly male narratives of the occupation, and also how Okinawan writers represented their region's distinct experience of American military occupation and what Okinawan literature teaches us about historical memory in Japan today. American forces still remain in Okinawa today and are a source of political controversy. Through careful analysis of literary texts and attention to writers and works long excluded from Japan's post-war literary canon, this book introduces fresh perspectives on the occupation era.
