Editorial Reviews

Review
'The aims of this book are those of an introductory text, but its achievement far exceeds its aims. It is a splendid introductory text with an excellent choice of readings ... the clarity and insight with which John Benson has set out the opposing arguments on central issues make it a book that will be instructive to teachers as well as students.' - Alasdair MacIntyre, Duke University

'The text is extremely clear, well-written and thorough ... the book will surely constitute an important addition to the field.' - Kate Rawles, Lancaster University

'Benson's excellent contribution to the growing field of environmental ethics will be of welcomed interest to all.' - Mark Woods, University of San Diego

From the Back Cover
Environmental Ethics: An Introduction with Readings is an introductory textbook on ethical issues about the environment and our involvement with it.

Presupposing no prior knowledge of philosophy, John Benson introduces the reader to one fundamental question, whether a concern with human well-being is an adequate basis for environmental ethics. The book explores this question by considering some of the techniques that have been used to value the environment and by critically examining 'light green' to 'deep green' environmentalism. Each chapter is then helpfully linked to one or more readings from key thinkers in the field and with the use of exercises, readers are encouraged to think critically about the readings themselves.

Environmental Ethics: An Introduction with Readings presupposes no prior knowledge of philosophy and by the end of the book readers will be able to:

confidently and critically discuss aspects of the meaning of 'environment'
understand and evaluate for themselves the different approaches to environmental ethics
critically discuss some key texts by leading writers on environmental ethics, including J. S. Mill, E. O. Wilson, Paul W. Taylor, Warwick Fox and Val Plumwood.

Key features also include activities and exercises enabling readers to monitor their progress throughout the book, chapter summaries and guides to further reading.
