From the Back Cover
In the multicultural world of the Roman empire there were many ways of 'experiencing' Rome. From the city of Rome and its educated elite, the pax romana had extended 'Roman' culture across the cities and countryside of the provinces, supported by networks of trade and communications. Yet the empire contained other traditions, of minority cultures and of dissent, which posed a challenge to this mainstream. And for individuals, factors such as religion, status and gender were important in defining their social identity. So how did these various elements operate within the power structures of the empire?
Unique in their broad-based coverage, the twelve essays in this book use material from across the empire in an interdisciplinary discussion of these topic. Specially written for an Open University course on 'Culture, Identity and Power in the Roman Empire', they offer an up-to -date analysis from a range of viewpoints. Together they provide a fresh look at some central aspects of Roman culture and society.
