'Sakwa's Russian Politics and Society is THE place to begin to understand how Russia found itself in its current perilous position.' - Ronald Grigor Suny, University of Chicago, USA
'A remarkable achievement - comprehensive in scope and judicious in its interpretation, this is a satisfying portrait of the world's largest state as it enters a new millennium.' - Stephen White, University of Glasgow, UK
'Already a standard in the field, this third edition of Richard Sakwa's Russian Politics and Society represents a provocative yet balanced account of the country's political development and degeneration. The coverage is impressively comprehensive, rendering its subject both accessible to lay readers and engaging for the specialist. From the Back Cover
Richard Sakwa's Russian Politics and Society is the most comprehensive study of Russia's post-communist political development. It has, since its first publication in 1993, become an indispensable guide for all those who need to know about the current political scene in Russia, about the country's political stability and about the future of democracy under its post-communist leadership.
This is the ideal introductory textbook: it covers all the key issues; it is clearly written; and it includes the most up-to-date material currently available. For this third edition, Richard Sakwa has updated the text throughout to include details of Yeltsin's second term and the impact on Russian politics of the rise of his successor, Vladimir Putin. It also contains a substantially expanded bibliography, and appendices showing election results, chronology, social and demographic figures and recent census data.
This new and revised edition consolidates the reputation of Russian Politics and Society as the single most comprehensive standard textbook on post-Soviet Russia.

The Mans a Genius!
While studying for my degree at the University of Kent where he teaches, I took both of Prof. Sakwa's main modules, and so this book was obviously central to both the courses. First of all I must say in the flesh he nice guy and a supurb teacher and I found his lectures and seminars among the best I attended during my studies, mainly because of his immence knowledge of Eastern European and Russian politics.
To put it bluntly he is the among the top 2 or 3 leading experts in the world on the subject and should you be studying Russian politics THERE IS NOT A BETTER BOOK THAN THIS. Its gives a great overview of pretty much any topic you might meet in a Russian political course and is packed with information and Sakwa's personal insights and thoughts. I cannot recommend this book (and his others) highly enough. If your studying Russian politics get, it will help you pass!
