"The Origins of the First World War" is a concise introduction to one of the major historical controversies. This pamphlet: surveys the roots of the conflict; assesses the legacy of Bismarck's diplomacy; outlines the assassination crisis; focuses on influences affecting individual countries; and examines the historical debate. This edition includes a new introduction, a chronology of the key events and an update on the historical debate explaining the directions in which the historiography is heading.

Customer Reviews
Like the curate's egg!
The book is fairly typical of the traditional approach to the theme. It sets out relatively clearly both the long term and short-term causes of the war in a dispassionate and somewhat uninteresting way. Some of the material is well presented but to my mind is over-condensed. The section 'The Historical Debate' is probably useful to a first year undergraduate who hasn'd done much work on the subject. In fact, the series itself appears to be a set of cribs for students who want to avoid the hard graft of academic research and reading. With only 56 pages under its belt, its price is somewhat excessive§
