Editorial Reviews

Review

'What is best about this book is that they quickly get into issues of learning, showing how students' feedback can help us to improve our practice as teachers and, more intangibly, increase students' sense of belonging to a learning community ... In an era when school self-evaluation will be central to the Ofsted process, schools ignore advice like this at their peril.' - Times Educational Supplement

'For any school that is examining its practice of consulting pupils, this book will provide a wealth of guidance. For those schools that have not yet considered consulting pupils then this book makes essential reading.' - Special Children

From the Publisher
Materials from a project funded as part of the ESRCs Teaching and Learning Research Programme

It is often difficult to address change in schools. Pupil consultation is an ideal starting point. It is a good way to respond to pupils' requests for more autonomy and responsibility in school and it enhances their sense of membership of the school as a learning community. Consultation is about creating active learners who can work well with others. This series of publications contains a wealth of ideas that can also be used for developing Citizenship Education.

Practical, whole school suggestions

Some schools are already experienced in ways of building consultation into their everyday practices, while others are interested but uncertain how to proceed. This series of publications offers practical suggestions for getting started, and ideas and support for teachers who want to explore the wider possibilities of building new partnerships with their pupils.

All the materials you need

The series consists of two A4 looseleaf resources (Consulting Pupils and Students as Researchers) and a book (Consultation in the Classroom). Each A4 resource includes a CD-ROM which provides a range of digital files. These include key sections from the text and summary presentations for use with parents, governors, teachers and on courses of initial teacher training. The resources come with a licence to photocopy within your institution. The book offers detailed analyses of pupil consultations in different classroom contexts.

The project is coordinated by Jean Ruddock; co-directors are Madeleine Arnot, Michael Fielding, Julia Flutter, John MacBeath, Donald McIntyre, Kate Myers and Diane Reay; team members: Sara Bragg, Nick Brown, Helen Demetriou, David Pedder and Beth Wang. Project secretaries: Nichola Daily and Ann Curtis.

From the Back Cover

In this book, the authors consider the potential benefits and implications of talking to students about teaching and learning in schools. Key issues they discuss include:

* the importance of engaging young learners in a focused dialogue about learning
* the role of pupil consultation in helping schools to develop new directions for improvement
* the wider implications of pupil consultation and participation in teaching the principles of citizenship and democracy.

Using examples of pupil consultation initiatives in primary and secondary schools, Jean and Julia demonstrate how an agenda for change based on pupils' perspectives on teaching and learning can be used to improve classroom practice.
