Editorial Reviews

Review
The long-awaited task of producing a comprehensive, detailed and well illustrated high dependency nursing resource has been successfully achieved in this textbook. Moore and Woodrow have compiled what might be described as a definitive and highly accessible text for nurses working in high dependency or similar critical care areas. Its depth and coverage of pathophysiological changes, interventional therapies, psychosocial concepts and professional issues makes this an unusual book and one that represents added value. Each chapter has been carefully structured and devised to enable readers to apply the evidence in a practical way. It is likely to be sometime before there is a resource for practitioners, students and university lecturers that is able to match this major contribution in terms of developing skills and the knowledge base for nurses working in high dependency nursing.
- John Albarran, Principal Lecturer in Critical Care, University of the West of England

"An excellent and up-to-date guide for health practitioners caring for the acutely ill and highly dependent adult within the hospital setting.... It will become an essential resource for one of the most rapidly developing areas of health care and useful to both individuals and in clinical practice areas. High Dependency Nursing Care is organised into four distinct sections which comprehensively address the spectrum of high dependency care from psychosocial needs, social and interpersonal skills, pathophysiology, common treatments, respiratory and haemodynamic monitoring to professional issues. It also provides very good reference material and practical information on several aspects not all included in similar texts, for example, health promotion, care of patients with trachyostomies, BiPAP and chest drains." - Jane Roe, Critical Care Lecturer Practitioner, St George's Hospital Medical School, London

An important book for all nurses who look after the acutely ill. The authors have produced a text with an emphasis on the many intangible and difficult-to-manage aspects of high dependency nursing. It encourages nurses to reflect on the art and science of nursing and how they can use their unique skills to achieve quality outcomes for the patient and their family. - Kathy Daffurn, Associate Professor and Co-Director Division of Critical Care, Liverpool Health Service, New South Wales

A must for all nurses, regardless of grade!4
Up to date and easy to read. Good value and a must for students needing a book for high dependancy nursing. Explanations are clear and each chapter has time out sessions so you can evaluate and reflect on what you have just read and learned. This book discusses topics such as nutrition, stress and pain management. There are chapters on shock, neurological systems, coronary syndromes, renal failure, diabetes and more. It teaches you about blood gases, suctioning, fluid and electrolytes etc. Its a good size book, easy to carry with you to uni or work. Well worth the money.

Core text material5
This is a highly accesible book that covers the fundamental aspects of high dependency nursing that are not always covered in other texts. The book does demand that you have a basic understanding of many physiological aspects but spells this out for each relevant section and with it's practice related aspects make it core text material for anyone working in a high dependency area.
