The second edition of this book, while maintaining the character of the original, brings the study up to date. Also included is a rewritten introduction.
Customer Reviews
The most enjoyable guide to the later middle ages around.
Keen takes us on a journey through England during the later middle ages and, unlike most historical texts, does so in a manner which is both informative and enjoyable. His text reads almost as if it were a story; gripping from its outset focussing on the early wars of Edward I and their aftermath, through the peasants revolt and the plague, dealing with each aspect in the depth it deserves. Keen takes on all aspects of English history in this era. He deals with not only the role of the King and governance, but also social structure, economic changes and fluctuation (especially the impact of war), Lollardy and Monasticism, the War of Roses, the list goes on and on. As a base text book for understanding the era, I could recommend no better, although if being used for academic study (as I have used it myself greatly for degree level work) then it is greatly enhanced be being supplemented with other subject specific books. However, this is to take nothing away from Keen; the book is marvelous and an absolute essential for both those studying the period and also for those who are simply interested in this period of history.
