From the Back Cover
Learning to teach might sound easy but the reality involves hard work and careful preparation. To become an effective teacher requires subject knowledge, an understanding of your pupils and how they learn and the confidence to respond to dynamic classroom situations.
This book offers a sound practical introduction to the skills needed to qualify as a teacher, and is designed to help you to develop those qualities that lead to good practice and a successful future in education. This 4th edition has been updated to include changes to the National Curriculum for schools in England, an introduction to the Scottish system, as well as developments in the curriculum for early professional development.
With a focus on evidence-based practice, the book contains many examples of how to analyse practice to ensure pupil learning is maximised. Activities or tasks in each chapter also provide opportunities for student teachers to analyse their own learning and performance and provide an analytical toolkit for the beginning teacher. Web-based links to sources of new knowledge that supports evidence-based practice are also included.
As well as containing useful strategies and ideas for enhancing teaching and learning, Learning to Teach in the Secondary School covers many of the situations and potential challenges faced by the student teacher and the newly qualified teacher.
The book contains 29 units, organised into 9 chapters, each covering a key concept or skill, including:
- managing behaviour to support learning;
- ways pupils learn;
- planning lessons and schemes of work;
- differentiation, progression and pupil grouping;
- assessment;
- inclusion and special educational needs;
- using ICT in teaching and learning;
- getting your first teaching post.
This book is the core text for the subject-specific Learning to Teach series by the same editors, also published by Routledge, and is an essential buy for every student teacher.

It's extremely well laid out and covers a lot of ground - from Classroom Management/Psychology to Professional Themes. It's helpful having access to a text with up to date information. A comprehensive guide to becoming a seocondary school teache
This book is a comprehensive guide for those who wish to undertake teacher training to become a secondary school teacher. Not only does it cover the main issues in teaching such as lesson planning and behaviour management but it also give a useful yet concise guide to other important aspects of teaching such as details on the national curriculum, the psychology of pupils and how to maximise learning for your pupils taking in to consideration different learning styles and abilities.
The most useful aspects were the suggested exercises and issues to consider in order preparing oneself for school placements.
Ideal book as a guide for teaching in secondary schools
As a new PGCE Physics student I've found this book useful as a guide. Its easy to pick up and just read a small section that you wish to either study or to look at a specific problem. I can see it also being used as reference material during your first teaching postion.
