‘Learning how to learn’ is widely acknowledged to be an essential preparation for lifelong learning.
This book is based on the idea that formative assessment or ‘assessment for learning’ provides a foundation for learning how to learn. It offers schools a set of in-service resources to help teachers develop new classroom practices informed by sound research. It builds on previous work on formative assessment but it adds an important new dimension by taking account of the conditions within schools, and across networks of schools, that help teachers to promote learning how to learn in their classrooms. Thus, the book also contains resources for developing the professional culture of schools.

The materials have been developed in collaboration with forty primary and secondary schools, as part of the Teaching and Learning Research Programme. It collects together the materials provided to these schools and gives guidance and examples of some of the different ways in which schools used or adapted them. The book is linked to a website where further help is also provided.
