Editorial Reviews

Review

'It is so refreshing to read a book about primary teaching that takes the child, and learning and teaching as its focal points. So often books in this area are so impersonal with their focus on subjects and raising standards.' - Paul Lunn, Northumbria University, UK

From the Back Cover

The need to achieve the latest Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) standards for teaching must be used as a vehicle to liberate innovative and reflective thinking and action. Written specifically for student teachers on PGCE and BEd courses, as well as students on education studies courses, this textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of teaching within the primary school. It will encourage those working towards QTS and all studying for education qualifications to develop a fuller understanding and appreciation of teaching as professional practice through an emphasis on:

  • promoting relationships and motivation in the classroom
  • employing a range of teaching and assessment strategies
  • encouraging creativity and transferable teaching skills
  • highlighting personalised learning.

Incorporating new material on Higher Level Teaching Assistants, learning styles and the Every Child Matters agenda, as well as updated further reading, including references to QTS standards and National Literacy/Numeracy, this fully-updated fourth edition remains essential reading for all student teachers on initial teacher training courses at the primary level, newly qualified teachers and more experienced teachers wishing to update their practice.

Customer Reviews

This book is an excellent read- ive used it lots of times!!5
When beginning my teaching degree specialising in the Early Years I knew that I would need some good books to help me. It's now the end of my second year at university and Denis Hayes has been my saviour on many occasions.
This book tells you everything you need to know about how schools work; how to plan, prepare and assess lessons; what QTS means for you.
Honestly, i have quoted this book in 11 out of 14 assignments over the last two years.
A MUST HAVE for anyone in (or entering) teacher training.

An extremely usful Primary Textbook5
If there is one book you need for your teaching degree then this is it! I definitely recommend buying this book, it has been my bible for the last four years. It is well written, clearly laid out and easy to read. It is comprehensive, informative, and very useful for putting the relevant information into practise in the classroom. It will cover everything you need from referencing acedemic assignments to real life tips for working in the classroom.
I wouldn't have done my training without this book.

Extremely helpful, a necessity for any teacher5
I found this book extremely helpful, useful and it is very easy to understand. For any student teacher like myself this book is ideal and is my bible for my course, but I think this book is a necessity for anyone in the teaching profession. A very enjoyable read.
