Product Description

This core textbook introduces the reader to the study of education itself. It invites the reader to question what education is, what it is for and who it is for. It challenges the assumption that education equals school and takes the reader on a trip from the cradle to old age.

From the Back Cover

This fully updated, third edition of An Introduction to the Study of Education provides a comprehensive and reflective introduction to the study of education, inviting students to question what education is, who it is for and what purpose it serves. Taking the reader from the early years through to lifelong learning, it examines all forms of education and learning.

Including five completely new chapters and a step-by-step guide to essay writing, this revised edition provides:

  • A full exploration of the historical, sociological, philosophical and psychological roots of education
  • A clear focus on the individual levels of education – preschool, compulsory, post-compulsory and lifelong learning
  • The latest debates within special educational needs
  • Insights into the historical development of education and the role of and background to research in education
  • A focus on current educational practice and diversity across all of the United Kingdom.

Written in a clear and accessible style, this is the essential core text for all beginning students on undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Education Studies and all those interested in education today, where it came from and where it is going.

Customer Reviews

An easily readable introduction to the world of education.4
This book is not only for those interested in studying education, but also for those who have an interest in education generally. The book looks at various aspects within education, including race, gender and social class, and details education through the ages, from pre-Reformation to the present day. A good starting ground for those wishing to study both QTS and non-QTS education courses.

An excellent starting point4
I'm a second year student on a BA Education Studies with MFL course, and was advised to buy this reader in my first year. Now I'm nearly at the end of my second year, and it is still extremely useful. As the previous review has mentioned, it covers a variety of aspects of education, both policy and controversy, and presented in a well organised way. It proves an excellent starting point for essays on different topics, and provides enough coverage of issues I am nnot studying, but still need to be aware of, without becoming dry and over-detailed. Highly recommended!
