Product Description

Part of a series that introduces children to the concept of the past and the fact that everyday objects have changed over time, this book examines the history of leisure and work at the seaside. The author discusses how life in the past differs from life today, looking at the topic chronologically in decades from the 1900s to the 2000s. The book includes a timeline running across the bottom of the spread to indicate which decade is being discussed. Case-study boxes provide anecdotes from the past.

Excellent for learning about the seaside4
As a student teacher i have used this book on teaching practice in Key Stage 1 and discovered it to be wonderful resource, furthermore the children responded well to it which is the most important bit. This book is extremely informative and excellent for whole class teaching in the classroom. It provides useful explanations of the past and the present in child friendly language complete with an old picture from the seaside and a new one to help the children's understanding. The book is set out in chronological order starting in the 1900's and then every decade until it reaches 2000.The book deals with transport to the seaside, piers and amusements, swimming, health issues, war and peace, up to the development of caravans and aeroplanes. The original photographs in this book also provide a valuable primary source. This book has a clear layout and its text is accessible to children as it includes a glossary of new/difficult words and an index.Overall it promotes knowledge and understanding of the seaside in the past up to the present.I would definately recommend this book for the classroom as it provides a great base for learning in both history and geography.

Learning about the past in a fun way!4
What I particularly liked about this book was the amount of old photographs in it that show indeed what the seaside was like in the past.I also liked the way it included photographs of the seaside today in contrast to the old photographs. Furthermore the information is written clearly and difficult words appear in bold, I found this extremely helpful.

I would definately recommend this book as it is extremely enjoyable and interesting. This is the book for you if you want to learn what the seaside was like in the past.
