Too simplistic
Whilst this book offers easy to read material, explained subsinctly through diagrams, and was a welcome relief to such guides as CGP which constantly tell awful jokes, this book fails in being too simple. The AS level course demands a thorough understanding of the syllabus, and whilst it is useful for last minute revision, the CGP "AS-Level Chemistry" revision book is far more useful, as it explains some of the more difficult concepts in a clear and precise way. And whilst not geared directly to the OCR syllabus, is a far better revision tool. It also differs from most of the other CGP books in that it doesn't tell many jokes; in fact it limits itself to just one per page. So I would recommend that people studying this course of all abilities go for the CGP book, even though it is a bit weightier.
Simple? Yes? Relevant? Definitely
Here is a little background. I am basically an 18 year old student who just finished his A Levels. Instead of taking what university offers I got, I decided that I wanted to go into Medicine, for which I needed to take A Level Chemistry. I have only used this book, and while it remains simple and very thin, you only learn what you NEED to learn. It's perfect as a companion textbook, but at a stretch can be used alone.
I got this book October 2007 so I could sit all my AS modules in January. With the aid of past papers, this book effectively got me through the AS course. In 3 months. I passed all 3 papers with an A and two Bs which I will resit come June anyway.
What I got is irrelevant, at the end of the day, if this book can help me get those kinds of grades in only a few months, how effective would it be if you used it over a year?
Brilliant
This book is the best revision guide, for me atleast! It provides all of the necessary information with no superfluence and there are many clear and simple diagrams too. Moreover, there are no stupid people telling jokes and trying to put it into "cool" language like in some other brands of revision guide. So, buy it! Oh yeah good value for money too!
